Introduction To Ear Candling

Ear Candling is an age-old "home remedy' used to soothe the ears and to relieve pain and itching from infections and other conditions. Many people believe the process helps the body excrete any excess wax. Other benefits may include helping dry out any fluids in the ear canal.

Ear candling involves the use of a hollow candle coated with wax. The candle is placed gently into the opening of the ear and lit. Warm smoke travels through the candle and soothes the ear. Following the procedure, the ear usually continues to excrete excess earwax for a few days. There should be no discomfort during the procedure or afterward.

Today, ear candling is practiced all over the world. Candle makers now use modern manufacturing techniques, quality control and hygienically sound practices to produce better and more consistent products. As a result, the practice of ear candling is growing even more popular every year!

The process is soothing, safe and natural if used wisely. If you do not experience the desired effect from ear candling, you may need to consult a physician. Ear candling is a home remedy; it is not a medical procedure. The process may make you feel better and allow your body to heal naturally, but use common sense:

Ear candling should not be used as a substitute for medical diagnosis and treatment.

If you have a serious ear disease, tubes in your ears, ear drum damage or an upper respiratory infection, consult a physician before you attempt this process.

Why Use Ear Candles?

The purpose of candling is to remove wax buildup, especially the heavy impacted wax that normal cleaning cannot remove. Candling is a more comfortable and less expensive alternative to the traditional cleaning method of forcing water into the ear canal.

Candling is also believed to remove candida, yeasts, fungus, and remnants of past infections. The Ear, Nose and Throat Journal of U Medical lab reported that the types of bacteria we currently fight in our ears include Streptococcus pneumonia, Staphylococcus aurous, Anaerobic bacteria, and Influenza A and B.

A lifetime of residues build up in the ear canal!

Ancient Egyptians are the first known culture to utilize coning, but they used hollow reeds instead of candles. Today, coning/candling uses a hollow candle, much like a large straw. Although the candles themselves may differ from each other, most candles are made of 100% unbleached cotton (muslin) fabric coated with purified paraffins and/or bees' wax. There are also some specialty candles which contain herbs and oils.

Candling applies simple laws of science. The flame of the candle (when the candle is properly seated in the ear) creates a draw or vacuum which pulls the wax, fungus, candida, yeast, and other particles of debris out of the ear and up into the bottom of the candle.

The vacuum is caused by the warmed air from the flame and the colder existing air moving through the hollow chamber of the candle. The movement and compression between the ear canal and the candle chamber generate air flow with increasing velocity, thus producing the "sucking" vacuum.

As the particles are drawn from the ear and into the bottom of the candle, the air flow becomes disrupted. This is why it is important to remove the candle and "tap out" the contents.

Conventional ear cleaning processes done at home or in the doctor's office will never come close to removing what this gentle technique can remove by natural health professionals.

EAR CANDLING IS AN AMAZING ELIMINATION TECHNIQUE

It also greatly improves mental clarity, energy and a sense of well-being because it allows the glucose and oxygen to travel through the now clean passage ways and enter into the brain thus restoring neural functions. This "new" method of caring for our ears has been with us for thousands of years dating back to the ancient Chinese, Greeks, and Egyptians. Even our own native American Indian tribes used a similar procedure.

EAR CANDLING involves the use of a custom made, hollow candle that is coated with beeswax. The candle looks like a large crayon. While the client lies comfortably on a cushioned table, the hollow candle is placed gently in the outer opening of the ear. The client's head is fully covered. Massaging of the face and neck areas around each ear canal aids the release of often astounding quantities of inner ear debris with immediate and long lasting benefits. Babies can receive this procedure while sleeping in one's arms. Many adults use this technique as a regular part of their overall health program.

Who Should Not Be Candled?

A: Anyone who has in the last year had any ear, nose, throat or sinus surgery or has had tubes in their ears in the last year should not partake in ear candling. The same holds true of anyone with tumors in the ear, a punctured or bleeding ear drum or any other serious ear conditions.

How Often Should You Candle?

Ear Candling is used for soothing the symptoms of ear problems and assisting the ear in its natural removal of unwanted wax and debris from the ear canal. Because the ear candling process may help the natural elimination of the earwax, we suggest people allow a day or two between candling sessions.

Use two to four candles per ear during each session. This allows the slow candling process to complete a cycle to benefit the ear, which then replenishes its normal protective earwax within a day or so. If you follow this cycle, you can experience candling along with the change of seasons, about four times a year (or as needed).

How long does an ear candling session take?

When an experienced ear candler does the process, the session usually lasts an hour or more. Each candle takes approximately 5-10 minutes to burn down no closer than 4' from the ear.

You can do one to three session over a week's time to get the results you want, but remember to wait at least 24 hours between sessions.

How many ear candles can be used per session?

Young child or infant 1/2 to 1 candle per ear.

Young adult to an adult, 2 to 4 candles per ear are recommended per session.

Never exceed 4 candles per ear in any one candling session, as the ear canal may get irritated and become red and swollen. You may use more within 24 hours to get the desired results.
